Term 1, Week 2
Welcome to another year in the Senior Section.
It’s great to see our students again, and to get back into the busyness of the school year.
2019 has begun with a focus on the key goals of the Teaching and Learning Plan, particularly academic rigour. The staff have already identified the significant professional development they would like to undertake, with a view to developing understanding of HSC conventions – those aspects of HSC responses that markers are looking for, and which HSC teachers need to focus on as they prepare their students.
Our students too have begun the year well, with optimistic, happy faces, and an open acceptance of the school’s message: to work to the best of their ability, to multiply the gifts they have been given (Matt. 25:14-30).
They have responded well.
And our Years 7-10 boys look great in their new ties.
Welcome again, everyone, to the start of the new year.
Senior Section Co-ordinator
Emily Nobbs at the ACT Performance Hub
The Performance Hub is a 4-way partnership between Swimming NSW, Swimming ACT, Swimming Australia and the ACT Academy of Sport. It presents a transitional, high-performance program for swimmers to develop and progress from talented age-group swimmers to the National team.
Training and events take place at the Australian Institute of Sport, where swimmers benefit from high-tech equipment and development methods, such as underwater video.
Emily will be fully accepted into the training program when she commences university in Canberra next year; in the meantime, Emily has been participating in individual events and training sessions. She was in Canberra last weekend.
Emily spent a week in training in the last holidays, and will be there in the next holidays too.
Congratulations Emily on this latest exciting development in your career.
Sport with Mr Snitch
Mr Snitch has been attached to OCS for the past two years, mainly in the area of music. You may recall his leadership of the Beginner Band for the CEN Music Festival in 2018.
This year, Mr Snitch has opened another page of his book by accepting the OCS Sport Coach position. He is well qualified, trained and experienced for the role: he trained as a PDHPE teacher before working for a number of years as the sports master at the Scots School, Bathurst. He subsequently opened his own personal training business and gymnasium.
Mr Snitch has coaching levels in Athletics, Gymnastics and Rugby, and has coached many other sports, including Soccer and Water Polo, at both school and representative levels.
Mr Snitch will continue to tutor band and choir, while running some private lessons as well.
We welcome Mr Snitch to OCS as our new Sports Coach.
VET Courses Commence (incl. Primary Industries…)
The Bembooka facilities have been full of focussed and enthusiastic classes, as the students settle into the routine of a practical, hands-on learning environment.
Here are our new Primary Industries students, with teachers Mrs Kath Berry and Mr Wes Brown.
We look forward to lots of practical, engaging learning in each of the VET classes.
The 2019 Dedication Service was held last week, to offer the year ahead to the Lord.
The service was followed by a visit to the proposed site of the new hall and gymnasium, where we gathered around the perimeter of Phase 1, to gain an idea of the scale of the building.
A video of Dedication Service highlights will be uploaded to YouTube shortly – please keep an eye out for that.
Thanks to Mr Geoff Metcalfe for these photos and the video.
2019 Information Evenings
Stage 5 and Bembooka
As students move into the Senior school (Years 9-12), we recognise the maturity and focus with which they approach their studies and school life. To honour that and foster greater responsibility, we are opening up Bembooka Cafe to Stage 5 students, as well as Stage 6. This means that all Senior students can access the Cafe during their recess break to purchase hot drinks and food.
Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) will continue to purchase their items as normal – either by visiting the Cafe at recess or by emailing their order for a pick up.
Stage 5 students will need to pre-order and pay for their purchases prior to 9:00am, by dropping in an order form and money to the Cafe, which opens at 8:30am. This will enable the students to purchase food and beverages without risking a late arrival to class. They can pick up their order at recess (11:20am).
Our Cafe operator, Mrs Sonya Wratten, regularly emails the students to let them know what items are on the menu. We have fixed food choices as well as seasonal options.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us through the school’s Front Office.
