Term 4 Week 4

From the Coordinator

Academic Focus

We have been talking a lot in Middle School recently about our academic focus.

It is encouraging to see the reactions of the students to this discussion.

Most are very keen to do well academically, and understand the need to create a positive learning culture that encourages success.

To do well academically is in line with what we know God wants of us. There are many verses in the Bible that talk of doing the best with what God has given us, and this includes in our school work.

This week the focus of students across the school is on assessment whether in class or in examinations.

We pray, with you, that all the students will show what they know, to the best of their ability.

“He was fun to play with.” Adam

“It was very exciting when we first saw them.” Eliza

“It was interesting to get to know them and how they do things.” Hannah

“It was fun getting to know the little kids there.” Finn

“The buddies were very inquisitive, listened well and they were fun.” Grace

“It was a very enjoyable experience.” Henry

“We can’t wait for buddies to start next year.” Year 5

Mathematics Success

Congratulations to all the Stage 3 students who received Credit and Distinction awards in this year’s Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition. This competition has been running for 38 years and now attracts nearly 19,000 Stage 3 students from over 340 schools. It is designed to test students’ numeracy and problem solving skills.

A special congratulations goes to Henry Metcalfe on his achievement of a High Distinction, the highest level achievable.

Stages 3 and 4 Auslan have put the signs they have learnt this year into practice, each class producing a video. If you missed seeing these fantastic videos at the OCS on Show last term, click on the links below to watch all our Auslan students in action.

OCS School Stream App – Log in Now!

Many parents have been singing the praises of School Apps for quite a while. After lots of discussions, parent focus groups, App trials by staff and parents and training sessions with App providers, we are pleased to announce that the OCS School Stream App is up and running!

Please follow the instructions below to log onto the App. In order for this to be an effective tool for communication we obviously need as many members of the OCS community as possible to have the App on their device(s). Currently we have over 50% of school families on board and we are looking forward to seeing this figure sky rocket over this next week. At present we will be using the App to communicate regarding: Forms, Notes, Newsletters and Reminders.

Please contact the Front Office should you have any questions about our exciting journey into digital communication, and many thanks to all of the parents who have helped us to move in this direction.

2018 NSW All Schools Athletics Championships

The NSW All Schools Athletics Championships were held on Thursday, 27 September through to Sunday, 30 September. Two students, Jordan White of Year 7 and Evan Smith of Year 10, represented OCS at these championships. Both students did very well in their respective events.

Jordan competed in the 13 years 100 metres and 200 metres. He came third in the 200 metres and fourth in the 100 metres.

Evan represented OCS in the 15 years Javelin. He came a very respectable ninth out of a field of twenty-two.

Congratulations to both Jordan and Evan on such fine efforts.

NSW PSSA Athletics Championships 2018

The NSW PSSA Athletics Championships were held on Wednesday, 31 October and Thursday, 1 November at Sydney Olympic Park. Mackenzie Wright represented OCS and the CIS in the 12 years 100 metres.

Mackenzie ran in her heat on Wednesday and achieved a personal best. This PB resulted in her qualifying for the semi-finals as the 7th fastest qualifier. On Thursday, Mackenzie came 14th in the semi-finals. This did not lead to a place in the finals, however, it represented her overall place out of an initial field of forty.

Well done Mackenzie!!
