Dragon Boat Race - 2009

Last weekend ( 14 to 15 Nov) I was taught a powerful lesson about teamwork and achievement by 18 young people – all students of Orange Christian School.

On Saturday and Sunday a group of our students took part in the inaugural Orange Dragon Boat Regatta. Most had never used a single paddle or sat in a canoe before. So the idea of sitting in a huge canoe and paddling in perfect time was a new challenge.

By the time of the races on Sunday, the students involved had moved from a group of individuals, perhaps worried about what others might think of them, to a team of 18 paddlers intent on doing their best. And their best was great.

Against teams of 20 adults and students from other schools our 18 students showed that a team of determined OCS students can hold their own by working together and encouraging each other. The result? One of the fastest times of the day, a first and a second in the heats, and third place behind the two Kinross teams in the schools final.

Thank you to families that supported the event and allowed your Sunday routine to be interrupted this once. Congratulations to: Skye Abel, Kimberley Bobeldyk,  Michael Brown,  Adrian Bulivou, Benjamin Bulivou, Kaitlyn Chapman-Mortimer, Aidan Clough, Amy Cole, Kelsey Dean, Stephen Dodd, Adam Ellison, Eleanore Hordern, Monica Lee, Brittanie McLean, Thomas Pearson, Luke Sutherland, Annelise Wurzer – you are a great team and I enjoyed being part of your team. $1.9M Grant

The school has received a Australian Govt grant for a new library through the Building the Education Revolution program. The design and development application is awaiting Orange City Council approval.
